2024 Oregon CISO of the Year

David McMorries is the Chief Information Security Officer for Oregon State University (OSU), one of only three U.S. institutions designated as a land, sea, space, and sun grant university. David joined OSU in 2019 and has spearheaded the development of a comprehensive NIST Cybersecurity Framework-based program, which has significantly strengthened the university's information security strategy.
 
Under David’s leadership, the program has evolved into a widely supported and recognized component of the university's IT infrastructure. His proactive approach, transparent communication, and effective management have fostered trust within the university community, resulting in broad support for the program's rapid advancements.
 
OSU’s security team is responsible for operations, identity management, endpoint and desktop management, governance, risk, and compliance. David’s commitment to strengthening the university’s security has expanded the security team from five full-time employees to 20 and created invaluable experiential learning opportunities for 15 student team members.

David has a distinguished background in the United States Marine Corps, with 29 years of service in various roles related to operational communications and information technology. Notably, he served as the Commanding Officer of the Marine Corps Network Operations and Security Center and played a key role in establishing the U.S. Navy CYBERSAFE program. Prior to his role at OSU, David worked for Booz Allen Hamilton, supporting defense clients, and later as the Deputy CISO for the State of Oregon.

He holds a master’s degree in information technology management from the Naval Postgraduate School and a bachelor’s degree in Political Science from Oregon State University.
