Farewell from the WIS-PDX Outreach and Education Chair
The first WIS meeting I went to was during the last week of my maternity leave with my now five-year-old. I had been involved in outreach in grad school and was interested in re-engaging that in Portland. WIS seemed like a good venue. So I went to that meeting, baby in tow, not realizing what a big role WIS would play in my life. The energy and the comradery I found in the group made WIS a great avenue through which to start an outreach program, but a great opportunity for me professionally and personally as well. I’ve made friends, colleagues, and connections across Portland through WIS. I even found my way to my current job through the WIS community.I have loved working with all of the volunteers who have been a part of OE, both in the committee and as event volunteers. Seeing the variety of science that goes on in Portland and meeting the women who do it is truly inspiring. Sharing that excitement with girls, who are learning what they can aspire to and boys who are learning what they should respect is exciting.Watching the faces of young people who are inspired by the cool demos, by the stories of women in science, and by all of you has energized me over the years. I'm taking a step back, but I know that the amazing work at WIS (and Outreach and Education in particular) will continue to inspire me. I'm so happy to be able to hand over the reins to Shivali Kadam and excited to see where she takes Outreach and Education. Thank you, WIS community and WIS Board for all that you do!- Ruth Barrett
