When did my labmate become my stalker?: Creating safe spaces for diverse teams

Courage Campaign: Women's Stories of Survival and Speaking Out Against Oppression

The following is a story from a member of the WIS PDX community:

CW: Description of sexual harassment and stalking.

The following is an account from a WIS PDX community member:In my undergraduate research lab, a post-doc who was much older than me joined the lab. He was very friendly and familiar with me, which wasn't a problem at first, but he began working physically closer to me and touched my back or shoulder while we were working. It made me very uncomfortable and I would move away from him whenever I could. One day he showed up at my house uninvited. I had to tell him he couldn't be there and shut and locked the door in his face. I still don't know how he got my personal address.

When I told my PI, she was sympathetic, but the matter was never reported to HR.

Eventually the post-doc left the lab, but until then, we still had to work together.
